Lighting is one of the most overlooked aspects of interior design, yet it plays a crucial role in our overall well-being. For too long overhead LED lighting has been the primary way to light up most homes. Artificial lighting can disrupt our natural circadian rhythm—the internal clock that regulates sleep, mood, and energy levels. Poor lighting choices can lead to fatigue, stress, and even long-term health issues. However, by making conscious lighting decisions, you can create a home that enhances your health while meeting the needs of daily living.

Our bodies are naturally attuned to the sun’s cycle. In the morning, exposure to bright, blue-enriched light of dawn triggers our brains to alertness. In the evening the sun naturally fades to warmer, dimmer light which helps prepare our brains for rest. So how do we balance to not interfere in with our rhythms while supporting our lighting needs? In working with clients for over a decade I take the following

Wellness-Conscious Lighting Solutions

1. Layered Lighting for Balance

A well-designed room incorporates a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create harmony throughout the day. Use dimmable fixtures and smart lighting systems that adjust brightness and color temperature based on the time of day. Warmer hues in the evening help signal relaxation, while brighter, cooler tones during the day boost focus and energy.

2. Full-Spectrum and Tunable LED Bulbs

Full-spectrum and tunable LED bulbs mimic natural daylight, reducing the harsh effects of standard artificial lighting. These bulbs shift from cool to warm tones throughout the day, helping to regulate melatonin production and maintain a balanced sleep-wake cycle. Additionally putting all overhead lights on dimmers to help control the vibrance can assist in healthy brain cycles.

3. Selective Lighting Plan

Intentional design always comes down to details and planning. By identifying activity zones, furnishings, and strategic decor we can selectively develop a lighting plan that compliments both needs and health. Gone are the days of throwing up 4-8 overhead can lights in a room, with a lighting plan we selectively place a combination of downlighting and ambient accents lighting to fit a room's function and each area's purpose. For example swapping a wall sconce next to a bed for dim reading lights instead of a can light over the bed.
